Granada – La Gran Sultana

Founded on December 08th, 1524 by the Spaniard conqueror Francisco Hernandez de Córdoba, Granada is the oldest mainland city in the Western Hemisphere of the Americas. The name was given in honor of the Spanish city of Granada, birthplace of its founder. In the XVII Century, due to its important commercial position, Granada was pillaged several times by pirates who sailed through the San Juan River and Lake Nicaragua to surprise the city.

The well known North American, General William Walker proclaimed himself President of Nicaragua in 1855. Two years later he was banned from Granada, but before leaving he set the important buildings of the city on fire until they were reduced to ashes. In his escape he wrote on the ruins the negative legend that said: “Here was Granada”.

Today, Granada is considered as the Capital of Tourism of Nicaragua. It’s well preserved colonial architecture, its cobblestone streets, the tranquil atmosphere and its ideal geographic position make it a travel jewel destination in Latin America. Besides the attractions of the city, many places can be visited during the day such as: the Mombacho Volcano and cloud forest, the famous “Isletas” located in the Great Lake of Nicaragua, the Apoyo Lagoon, the “White Towns”, the Masaya Volcano National Park, the traditional markets, the Pacific beaches and more.

Granada and its region are ideal not only for tourism purposes but also for business opportunities. In fact, Granada has become more and more appropriate to host seminars, festivals and encounters in the marvelous environment that the colonial city offers. Real estate has also become very popular in the past years. The investment opportunities here are incomparable in the Americas, property rights and laws encourage this effort in the different areas.

Granada also offers a nice nocturnal atmosphere. You will enjoy your evening with family or friends, in some of the several restaurants, bars or discotheques, where it’s possible to enjoy from typical food to fine dining at the rhythm of a Latin music.
